Fairer Than Morning tells the story of the Miller family and their involvement in indenture and slavery, with a bit of romance thrown in. Set in Ohio and Pennsylvania during the 1800s, this work of historical fiction is loosely based on real life events of that time.
The lives of the saddler’s daughter and a young indentured man intertwine throughout the tale as the apprentice fights for survival while serving an evil and abusive master. Ann is inexplicably drawn to young Will, even as she is considering engagement to another. But is it true affection for the lad or merely sympathy of his dire situation?
Rosslyn Elliott hit the ground running with Fairer Than Morning, her debut novel. Her words bring the reader along on the ride of escaped slaves seeking refuge, and they’ll share the fear of discovery as did the family harboring the slaves and abused servant. The reader experiences the pain of the whip or brand through Ms. Elliott’s words.
Fairer Than Morning is the debut novel of Rosslyn Elliott, the first in a three book series she calls The Saddler’s Legacy. I’ll be watching for release of the other two books in the trilogy in 2011. I was given a complimentary copy of Fairer Than Morning in exchange for my unbiased review and am offering the book to one of my readers in a giveaway.
